Mentoring
In a Christian discipleship context, a mentor is someone with the necessary experience, knowledge and maturity who commits to assisting you in your spiritual, personal and ministry development through an intentional relationship. This type of mentoring has always been part of Christian growth and discipleship.
A few Biblical examples of mentors include…
Moses > Joshua (Ex 33:11; Num 11:28, 27:15-23; Deut 3:28)
Elijah > Elisha (1 Kings 19:16, 19-21; 2 Kings 2:1-18)
Naomi > Ruth (Ruth)
Barnabas > Paul > Timothy (Acts 11:25-26, 16:1-3; Phil 2:22; 1 & 2 Tim)
Jesus > the Twelve (Matt, Mk, Lk, Jn)
What is Bethel’s approach to mentoring?
- Mentee initiated relationships tend to work best. - Identify growth areas. Identify potential mentors. Ask someone to be your mentor.
- Start by assessing needs and agreeing on objectives - What will the focus be? How often will you meet? Set a time to reevaluate your commitment and objectives (maybe after 4 meetings).
- Follow up with someone from the Mentoring Core Team - Attend orientation. Receive periodic support emails. Meet with a core team member. Share suggestions.
What should I look for in a mentor?
You may want to consider these questions when looking for a mentor.
- Do they live a life of spiritual maturity; one worth imitating?
- Do they have a solid understanding of the scriptures?
- Are they an encourager?
- Do they see potential in people?
- Would we have good chemistry and both enjoy the relationship?
- Are we the same gender?
- Are they available?
